Conversation with Mimi & Eno

Thank you to Mimi Yin and Eno (5.5 years old) for chatting with me about playgrounds, parks and toys. Below is bulleted information that came out of our project.

Playgrounds:

  • Favorite playground is the playground at the NW corner of Fort Greene Park.

    • Because is has a lot of grass and monkey bars

  • Cuyler Gore is a spare playground, but its a rare nyc find because it has “big kid swings”

  • Harmony playground is fun because it has the same structure for many different age group. Every combination of sizes.

  • LLC and Union Square playgrounds have fun climbing structures.

  • Governors Island Adventure playground is really fun.

  • Water Lab playground at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

  • Liberty Science Center, Early Childhood space and giant tub of rice.

    • And the fake supermarket

    • And building cars

  • Battery City Park Playground and the circle bike.

  • Likes playground elements that show physics, like pushing an empty swing and watching it move. Likes to be on things where she can feel movement.

  • Likes hanging upside down, and going up the slide.

Parks :

  • Eno likes playgrounds more than parks. But she likes some of the structures in parks for playing on. In Fort Greene Park for ex: pyramid (for climbing) the stage, giant stairs, stone wall. Lots of places to play hide & seek. Can also play red light green light, use chalk, fish with a branch

  • Rolling down a hill

Toys:

  • Dolls, little tiny people and furniture, putting doll in stroller, imaginative play with dolls and cars (they talk to each other), tent, train tracks, getting in a box, blankets, fashion, dress-up, selfies, making houses and parking lots, restaurants with fakes money, plates and food, enclosed spaces, tunnels, Etch A Sketch.

  • Likes playing games that are a simulation of life.

  • Likes toys that lend themselves to storytelling.

  • Likes tools and construction

  • Loves the foam roller

  • Bouncy castles and trampolines
